Environment and resources
The protection and enhancement of the environment is of critical importance to the city, and one of the key features of the Sheffield City Strategy is to create a city that places the environment at the heart of all its decisions.
Planning can assist in achieving this through encouraging positive action to mitigate against climate change, preserving and enhancing biodiversity and enhancing open spaces and river corridors.
Use the links on the left for guidance and information on how Environment and Resources issues affect sustainable development. These points should be addressed in your sustainability appraisal.
Key requirements are highlighted below:
Sheffield is a very green city and protecting and enhancing its woodlands, countryside and green corridors will build on this distinctive character. This includes making more of the potential of Sheffield's rivers and canal for wildlife and open space, public access and celebrating heritage. Developments in the South Yorkshire Forest area will also be expected to have more tree planting.
The urban area of Sheffield is an Air Quality Management Area, so particular care will be required to minimise any further harmful development.
Sheffield has developed standards for the provision of waste storage and recycling facilities for different types of development.
