Design and construction

Images of Sheffield

New developments must incorporate sustainable design principles in their construction (Planning Policy Statement 1, Regional Spatial Strategy and Sheffield City Strategy 2005-2010).

Use the links on the left for guidance and information on how Design and Construction issues will affect sustainable development. These points should be addressed within your sustainability statement.

Key requirements are highlighted below:

Most larger-scale developments are required to reduce their carbon emissions by at least 10% using decentralised and renewable or low carbon energy sources.

Small-scale renewable energy equipment on houses will be encouraged, as research has shown that this can be an important contributor to minimising the energy demands of the city.

Sheffield is an exceptionally green city and green roofs are part of the planning vision for a sustainable Sheffield.  Green roofs are encouraged and emerging SDF policies will require major developments to incorporate green roofs unless there are good reaons not to.
