Sustainability Guidance
New development has to be sustainable. This guidance explains how the planning vision for Sheffield interprets the new national, regional and emerging local policy position on sustainability and climate change.
This guidance sets out five key questions that should be the starting point for considering sustainable development. Each question has a series of criteria relating to it that may help in developing your proposal.
The five key questions are - How can my proposal:
- Support and help revitalise the local economy?
- Reinforce Sheffield's neighbourhoods and communities?
- Provide a range of transport options and inclusive access?
- Protect and enhance Sheffield's natural environment and resources?
- Integrate high quality design and construction?
There are specific new planning requirements and objectives in the following areas:
Policy background
Sustainable development is the core principle underpinning Planning" (Planning Policy Statement (PPS) 1 p2) and Planning and Climate Change (the December 2007 supplement to PPS1) makes clear that development proposals must be consistent with the climate change policies in this PPS including in the interim period before development plans are updated to reflect this. The Regional Spatial Strategy reinforces this, and the Council is moving towards a series of local policies within the Sheffield Development Framework.
