Lighting Assessment
Glare from lighting associated with development, be it related to sport, industry, commercial or residential proposals may be held to affect residential amenity to an unacceptable degree and/or to adversely impact on the character of a Conservation Area, Listed Building or the open countryside.
Applications that are likely to raise issues relating to glare and light pollution need to be supported by detailed information that should include:
An equipment specification including:
- Height, diameter, colour of lighting columns / pylons.
- Size and design of luminaries (cowls) and their intended angles of installation.
- lamp type and wattage.
An application should also be accompanied by:
- an Isolux diagram (to an appropriate scale) indicating proposed light intensity levels at locations on and around the development.
- A clear statement indicating proposed hours of operation and details of any management arrangements / automatic switching equipment.
An excellent overview of issues relating to light pollution can be found in the Institute of Lighting Engineers (I.L.E.) ‘Guidance Notes for the Reduction of Light Pollution’
For larger schemes Applicants are encouraged to seek advice/ guidance direct from The I.L.E. at www.ile.org.uk/
Further guidance, with a particular emphasis on floodlighting relating to sports development can be found in the Society of Light and Lighting document LG04 Lighting Guide: Sports
