Main Entrance Hall
The striking features of the Hall's architecture are the repetitive archways (surmounted by intricate carvings in the stone) to complement the imposing Grand Staircase of Sicilian Marble, with a balustrade of alabaster, and the high domed skylight installed to allow effective use of natural light.
The carving over the main archway, which features a knight slaying a dragon, refers not to St. George, but to a local legend of the Dragon of Wharncliffe, and relates to power struggles of the past between the Earls of Wharncliffe and the lords of More Hall. The two Coats of Arms forming the keystone are those of the City of Sheffield and the Earl of Wharncliffe.
