Walking and Cycling
Sheffield is officially the greenest city in the UK and with a third of the city sitting within the boundary of the Peak District National Park there are endless walking and cycling opportunities for people of all abilities.
Wherever you are in Sheffield, you’ll be impressed not only by how much open space there is but by the variety of walks available. You don’t even need to go out to the Peak District to enjoy open countryside (although you should!), and there’s nothing grim about our industrial heritage trails.
For some easy rambling, try the Sheffield Round Walk – 15 miles of uninterrupted beauty through parks, woodlands and open countryside. Or take a stroll along the Five Weirs Walk and experience Sheffield’s famous heritage and the ingenious cobweb bridge.
Feeling a bit more adventurous? Then try the Sheffield County Walk – it’s only 52 miles…
If you want to plan your own routes, Ordnance Survey maps are widely available – OS278 (Explorer) Sheffield & Barnsley, and OS110 (Landranger) Sheffield & Huddersfield are great for starters.
The Trans Pennine Trail runs through Sheffield and is perfect for both cyclists and walkers- there are even sections suitable for horse back riding close to Sheffield. If you’re adventurous you could walk all the way to Hull!
The Sheffield Group of the Ramblers Association also provide details of guided walks in and around Sheffield
