Volunteering in the Shire Brook Valley

Three groups currently exist, all of which would appreciate new volunteers:
- The Shire Brook Conservation Group - who have been undertaking practical tasks within the valley for over 15 years. The group are actively involved in the maintenance of footpaths and habitat areas throughout the valley, using a wide range of conservation skills. They meet each week, at the Birley Spa Bathhouse on the first Saturday morning of each month (May to October only) and at the Shire Brook Visitor Centre for the other Saturdays.
- The Shire Brook Valley Heritage Group that started life as a small history group in 2004 with the sole aim of researching and producing a History Leaflet for the Valley. This completed, they became a constituted group in 2005 and have successfully completed a Local Heritage Initiative funded project, which includes writing a book ('Shire Brook, The Forgotten Valley'), producing 3D models, holding exhibitions and guided walks and developing a website.
- The Shire Brook Valley Wildlife Watch Group is a group for 8 - 14 year olds with an interest in nature. Jointly led by the Ranger Service and volunteer adults, the group is currently very active and enthusiastic. Children who wish to are able to work towards a ‘Gold Award’ - run by the Wildlife Trust nationally. The group also gets involved in other Sheffield Wildlife watch events and activities.
For those who don’t like to join a group, opportunities may also available to volunteer with the Ranger Service - please contact chris.smith@sheffield.gov.uk for more information.
Or, maybe just lend-a-hand occasionally. We have a number of ‘hidden’ helpers - who pick up bits of litter now and again, inform us of anti-social behaviour or even snip back branches or brambles that start to overgrow paths - every little helps to keep the valley a green and pleasant place to work, rest and play.
