New Woodland Path
A new woodland path has been constructed within the Station Road Woodlands. The path provides a link between existing paths, running mainly along the top side of the old hedgerow. Now finished, visitors have access to a much greater area of woodland and are able to complete a pleasant circular walk without having to cross any roads.
The path and fencing work has been carried out by the Sheffield Wildlife Trust, using Pioneer Funding (part funded by the European Union through the Objective 1 Programme in South Yorkshire and part funded by Yorkshire Forward).
At the same time, the Ranger sevrice has planted trees in some of the gaps in the old hedgerow. Given time, this should help to screen views of the road and keep the hedgerow alive and well for many years to come.
Woodland wildflower seeds, donated by South Yorkshire Forest have also been sown on the bare ground by members of the 3rd Killamarsh Cub Pack. The seeds planting was one activity during a woodland activity evening. They also learned about woodland management, helped clear Maple saplings, hunted for min-beasts and did some much needed litter picking.
Trees have now been marked up for thinning works in the autumn - to remove unheathy trees and those which are crowding out others - so more light can get into the woodland and more plants grow.
Phase 2 is due to be completed later this year.
