Mosborough Old Nursery
What's happening?
- An ecological survey is currently being undertaken by Roger Butterfield. The findings of this will help us to consolidate our ideas for the new management plan.
- A successful 'Bat Box Building' event was held in April - see Bat Box Builders Event Photos
The Site
The Mosborough Old Nursery has developed since the early 1980's from an abandoned tree nursery into a new mixed broadleaved woodland, adjoining the "Bridle Stile".
The woodland is divided into 2 compartments. That on the north side of the “Bridle Stile” is well-used by local residents for informal recreation. That on the south side is largely inaccessible. Environmental works have been carried out along the eastern end of the “Bridle Stile” in recent years, increasing it’s importance as a feature of local historical interest. (the position of the bridleway - the Old Sheffield to London Road - and it’s boundaries are identical to those shown on the 1772 map).
The woodland overlooks agricultural fields to the Moss Valley in the south east. The slope descends north west to south east from 180m a.s.l. to 160m above sea level. The north eastern boundary adjoins the Rose Hill housing development built in 2001/2, Kennels and Public House. An established badger sett was closed on the Rose Hill building site and an artificial sett established in it’s place. It lies within 2km of several semi-natural ancient woodlands, including Ridgeway wood, Bushes wood, 12 Acre wood and Ladybank wood.
The woodland boundaries are varied - including dry stone walls, hedgerows and modern residential fencing.
The growth of new housing immediately around the woodland has increased related pressures and usage.
The Trees and Woodlands Team, (Parks and Countryside) manage the woodland. Between 2000 and 2002 thinning works were carried out through a Woodland Grant Scheme.
A new 5 year Draft Management Plan is being researched and written. This is currently open for public consultation, with a view to beginning management work in 2007.
