Ecclesall Woods

Ecclesall Woods are situated in the south west of Sheffield, and cover 140 hectares (i.e. around 350 acres). They are the largest semi-natural woodland in South Yorkshire.  The woods are an extremely popular visitor destination and are particularly valued for their wildlife, historic and archaeological features.

 

 

 

 

Ecclesall Woods are designated as a Local Nature Reserve for wildlife, supporting several species and habitats of high priority within the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. The woods also contain a number of important prehistoric and early historic monuments. There's also a wealth of other heritage features, such as charcoal heaths, relating directly back to the wood's past management for timber and other wood products.

 

There are over 15 kilometres of paths and bridleways, which offer some wonderful walks. These include an ‘Easy Going’ trail suitable for the less able bodied and wheelchairs.

Ecclesall Woods is also part of the the route of the popular, 14 mile, Sheffield Round Walk.

Free car parking is available off Limb Lane, Dore and adjoining Abbey Lane. Visitors can also park on Abbeydale Road South (A621) and Whirlowdale Road.

Ambitious development plans for the Sawmill Site, off Abbey Lane, are currently underway.

 

Ecclesall Woods has been awarded the Green Flag quality management award each year since 2004.
