The Growing Together Project

A Growing Together Allotment

The Growing Together Project

The project is a partnership between Parks, Woodlands and Countryside Ranger Service and Sheffield Allotments and Leisure Gardeners Federation
Funding is secured from the Social, Economic and Environmental Development Programme (SEED) until March 2005 to work on five allotment sites - Firth Park (Brushes), High Wincobank, Meersbrook, Roe Wood and Ouse Road.

Project description
To promote and restore several allotment sites in Sheffield as valuable, sustainable community resources that are well cared for, well used and well managed by involving the local community in composting, recycling and healthy food production

Aim
·        To improve the physical environment of allotment sites through the renovation of derelict plots, increased security and increased access provision.
·        To build the skills and confidence of individuals and community groups to participate in the running and managing of allotment sites through training, promotion and fund raising.
·        To promote the use of allotments as a positive link to reducing food poverty, encouraging healthy living, reducing waste and promoting sustainable urban regeneration

The Health Projects team also supports a local community project: Local Enterprise Around Food (LEAF).  This project is focusing its work on Norwood allotment site, Herries Road, North Sheffield.  Its aim is to encourage and enable local people and groups to learn to grow organic food produce in a supportive environment.
