Parkwood Springs
Location
Parkwood Springs is a significant greenspace site located one mile north of Sheffield's city centre. It is bordered by Penistone Road, Herries Road, Shirecliffe Road and Rutland Road. It is a steep site, ranging between 200 feet and 575 feet above sea level.
Size
It stretches approximately 2km along the hillside and comprises around 81 hectares.
Ownership
The site has complex ownership and only part of the site belongs to Sheffield City Council.
Designations
Parkwood Springs is designated as an Open Space Area in the Unitary Development Plan, within that area is the additional designation for the landfill area as a Waste Disposal Area. The Sheffield Development Framework Draft Preferred Options Proposals Map designates Parkwood Springs as Open Space and a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation; with a waste management area. The Sheffield City Council land is largely designated as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest. The site also contains two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI's), of geologically important stone types. (Please note these are very steep and are not publically accessible)
Opening Times
Access is available to the Sheffield City Council land at all times. Users of the site should note that access to the Sheffield Ski Village is only within specific times and there is no public access to the adjacent landfill site run by Viridor.
Facilities and Features
- A sports ground with open football pitches and a playing field located off Cooks Wood Road.
- Heathland - a local action for biodiversity action plan target habitat.
- Two areas of 'Ancient Woodlands' - Scraithwood and Rawson Spring Wood, located off Herries Road.
- Little Pear Tree Field, a wildlife garden, located off Cooks Wood Road.
- A viewing platform, with views across the city.
- Shirecliffe Allotments.
- The historic Wardsend Cemetery, owned by the Church of England.
- The 'Boy and the Bird' sculpture on Rutland Road.
- The River Don and a railway line run along the west side, flanked by buildings with industrial heritage value.
- An agro forestry area; a pilot project which explores food production using woodland techniques. This is a new project in the early stages of development.
Regeneration
The Parks and Countryside Service are working in partnership with a number of organisations to regenerate this site. These include the Parkwood Springs Steering Group, a community group which supports and promotes the site.
Events
Events are held at the site throughout the year. These are advertised on banners at key entrance points and at Event Sheffield. Of note is the Beacons event, a story tell and pyrotechnics event, which is held at the end of October every year.
Access
The site has entrances on Rutland Road, Cooks Wood Road/Shirecliffe Road, Penrith Road and Herries Road. Public transport details are available from Travel South Yorkshire.
