Playground in Hillsborough Park
The playground has recently been extended thanks to a grant from Active England. The new area encourages physical play and discovery through the use of landform and sculpture, complimenting the existing traditional equipment. The playground is contained within a dog-proof fence and is overlooked by the pavilion.
Roary the Dragon
Lorraine Botterill carved the dragon during the 2004 Christmas Festival. Originally a diseased Beech tree within the park, he was carved mainly by chain saw with the more delicate work being done with mallet and chisels.
Lizard
Carved by Andrew 'Stoneface' Vickers as part of the 2005 Children's Festival. Two hundred children from nine local schools came to the park to help carve the lizard sculpture.
Snake
The snake winds for 200 metres through the playground, creating an interesting landform for children to climb up and run along. Its carved wooden head appears out of the ground near to Roary. The head was also carved by Lorraine and features a steel forked tongue.
Lookout Mounds
Two 1.8 metre-high mounds for playing 'King of the Castle'.
Picnic Tables
There are three rustic picnic tables provided by the Friends of Hillsborough Park to allow families to enjoy outdoor meals in the playground.
Equipment
The traditional equipment within the playground includes:
- Swings
- Slide
- Helicopter climbing frame
- Springer
- Two multi-units
- Turnstile
