Organising a community event can seem very daunting for small groups and the process can sometimes appear complex.  However small events are worth doing and, when successful, an event can be very satisfying for both the organisers and also for the people attending.

The key to a successful event is to plan the event carefully, well in advance, and the aim of the guide to organising small community events is to help you with community event planning.  If, after reading the guide, this still seems a bit daunting then there is nothing to stop you from running smaller activities that require a minimum amount of organising – see the list in the guide for ideas of different types of events!

If you are planning a larger community event there may be different requirements so please contact the Parks and Countryside Events Team who can provide you with a more detailed outdoor events guide.  The information in the booklet is only to be used as a guide and if you are unsure about any requirements on holding a public event please seek further advice from the Events Team.

Why hold a community event?

Herdings Park
There are so many reasons as to why your group might want to hold a community event, for example:

  • For publicity for your project
  • To celebrate the work of your group
  • To attract new members to your group
  • To increase the use of your green space
  • To try and involve hard to reach members of the community
  • To co-ordinate a work day/make a visual impact on the area
  • To help your project gain some momentum
  • To provide publicity to attract funders
  • For fun and to reward your group and volunteers

Whatever your reason for holding an event, such activities are very important in developing community awareness and community events are essential for the long-term future of your project - so get organising!  For further help or information please contact the Community Partnership Team.
