Civil Weddings and Partnerships Ceremonies
Civil Wedding Ceremony
Civil Wedding Ceremonies take place at registered or licensed venues. A Civil Ceremony is a legal ceremony conducted by a Registrar and it requires both parties to give notice.
Ceremonies can last between 10 and 30 minutes depending on the length of any additional readings or songs. Legal Civil Ceremonies must be non religious, so they cannot include hymns, religious readings or prayers.

Civil Partnerships Ceremonies
The Civil Partnership Act, passed in December 2005, enables same sex couples to register as partners. A Civil Partnership is a legal relationship, which is formed by signing a Civil Partnership Registration document. The couple are required to give notice and a Registrar will perform the ceremony. Couples can provide readings and music to make the ceremony personal and meaningful, but as with Civil Wedding Ceremonies they cannot include any religious or secular material.
