Ecological Services

Sheffield City Council Ecology Unit is part of the Parks and Countryside Service. The Unit operates an ecological advice service to various different City Council departments. The unit also plays an important role in the formation of the Council’s environmental policies. Advice and information is available to other organisations and members of the public.

The Sheffield Biological Records Centre

The Sheffield Biological Records Centre is held at the Ecology Unit and consists of information on the wildlife and habitats of the Sheffield district. The Records Centre also holds extensive information on over 200 of the best wildlife sites in the city, and over a million records of individual species. Various habitat and species surveys are also carried out every year and this information is held as part of the Biological Records Centre. Access to this information is available by appointment only - please see contact details below.

Sheffield Biodiversity Steering Group

Sheffield City Council is represented by the Ecology Unit on the Sheffield Biodiversity Steering Group, a partnership which includes both statutory and voluntary organisations. This group has published the Biodiversity Action Plans for Sheffield.  These include plans for several habitats and species which are priorities for conservation action both nationally and locally and include: Bats and Birds; Other Species; Wetland Habitats and Non-Wetland Habitats

Further information can also be found on the Sheffield Wildlife Trust website.
