Shepherd Wheel Conservation Project

Emblem for the Heritage Lottery Fund
We are looking to commission an individual or team to design and build an outdoor classroom as an integral part of an outdoor education space at Shepherd Wheel.  The commission will be of interest to artists, architects, landscape architects, green builders, craft workers, product designers, engineers and others.

We are looking for an innovative design and construction methods that reflect the history of the area and its fantastic setting, have an educational quality in their own right and look towards the future.

The commission is part of the repair and conservation of Shepherd Wheel, which is the earliest recorded, extant, water powered grinding mill in Sheffield.  The new outdoor education space will be used to communicate the history of water power and the diverse heritage and wonderful ecology of the Porter Valley.  The outdoor classroom will thus link the City’s beginnings and industrial evolution to its ambitions for a sustainable future.

This commission has been programmed to coincide with the landscape design and building design phases, as it is important that an integrated approach is taken to the design of these elements.

The total value of this commission is £27,000 (excluding VAT) to include design, manufacture and installation.

The design work must be completed by 24th July 2009.  Construction is programmed from February – March 2010.
