Parks Regeneration Strategy

Event in Norfolk Heritage Park

Sheffield's long term Parks Regeneration Strategy was first published in 1993.  It was jointly commissioned by the city council and Sheffield Wildlife Trust, and produced by the highly regarded and respected international parks and green space consultant, Alan Barber.

The strategy proposed major changes in the way parks and green spaces are managed.

It heralded a considerable change in the thinking behind the delivery of a parks and green space service.

The key policy recommendations of the Sheffield Parks Regeneration Strategy were subsequently updated in 1999 following widespread, city-wide consultation and are still applicable today.

In summary, the Sheffield Parks Regeneration Strategy policy priorities are:

  • Working in Partnership with others to raise the profile of public parks and green spaces;
  • Improving Management for people, wildlife and heritage;
  • Working with Communities to review and determine service standards;
  • Enabling Groups and Individuals to actively contribute to the service;
  • Developing the Ranger Service to support activities;
  • Making the Best Use of existing Resources;
  • Securing additional resources to improve the service.

In the last few years more debate has taken place nationally and locally on the role of parks and the environment influencing social and economic regeneration.  This has broadly mirrored the way forward and ethos proposed by the Sheffield Parks Regeneration Strategy.  All these local and national initiatives have led to a better understanding and greater awareness of the cross-cutting value and role of parks and other urban green space areas.

The Sheffield Parks Regeneration Strategy is identified as a best practice model towards creating positive change in service delivery by CabeSpace in their guidance towards the production of Green Space Strategies published in May 2004.
