Dance Strategy
Dance in Sheffield
'Dance is for everyone, whatever age, gender, ability or race and it is the most healthy of the Art forms. Dance brings people together and participation in dance can be seen as something so much more than just the physical benefits that it can offer'.
In Sheffield, dance has been and will continue to be a popular activity for many people and there are a wide variety of providers across the City(see below for booklet highlighting these venues). Dance is also a part of many events and has its own annual Chance to Dance event held in the City Centre
In May 2007, an exciting new Dance Strategy group for Sheffield was formed and was successfully launched in October 2007. The strategy initially aims to increase awareness and communication of Dance within the city, and incorporate dance for older people.
The group includes representatives from Activity Sheffield, Sheffield Futures, School Sport Partnerships, Higher and Further Education, Dance Works, City Limits Dance Centre and community dance practitioners.
Dance is the fastest growing art form, with over 13 % of the population now attending dance performances and over 4.8 million people participating in community dance each year in England, and this new strategy aims to achieve the following:
- Raise the profile of dance as a form of physical activity for all
- Increase the number of young people in the City who are participating in dance
- Work with adults and older people as a key priority in raising the physical activity levels of these groups
- To support annual festivals and events for adults and children that will raise the profile and create awareness of dance
The Strategy seeks to deliver dance in Sheffield through the support of community groups and appropriate courses for teachers, young leaders and community members, and the group will drive forward these initiatives until a Strategy review will take place in 2011.
