Active Sheffield
Introduction To Active Sheffield
Active Sheffield is Sheffield’s physical activity strategy group that sits under the Sheffield First for Health and Well Being Partnership. For more information visit the Active Sheffield website.
Active Sheffield was formed in 2002 and is the City’s physical activity strategy partnership.
Active Sheffield’s mission is to:
“Improve the quality of life for the people of Sheffield through Physical Activity”
Active Sheffield aims to achieve it’s mission by:
Stimulating Demand –
To promote the benefits of physical activity for health and well-being to the public, to inspire the public to participate and to ensure a clear and consistent approach to a physical activity message for the City.
Influencing Others –
To raise the profile of physical activity amongst key decision makers and to adopt a multi-agency approach to the planning, delivery and research of physical activity programmes in the city.
Improving Opportunities -
Increase the number and range of physical activity opportunities for everyone, but specifically focusing on the least active.
Improving Access -
To reduce the barriers to physical activity particularly: economic, environmental, personal and social barriers and transport and to reduce health inequalities/close the gap through physical activity.
Measuring Impact –
To measure the impact of outcomes and make the case for physical activity.
Active Sheffield has representation from a number of organisations including: Sheffield City Council, NHS Sheffield, Sheffield International Venues, The Keep Fit Association and the voluntary and community sector and Sheffield Hallam University.
A physical activity strategy, City on the Move was developed in 2004 to try to tackle the low levels of physical activity in Sheffield and to halt the rising levels of coronary heart disease, overweight and obesity and diabetes. This document has recently been reviewed and an update will be posted on the site in the near future.
Active Sheffield is also responsible for Sheffield’s physical activity campaign, ‘The People’s Movement.’ You can also visit The Peoples Movement to find lots of information on where and how to be active.
