Horticultural Standards

The horticultural standards adhered to within the city centre are based upon the standards set out in the Management Plan for the public realm areas. The horticultural maintenance plan is a comprehensive standard that all personnel involved in this area of work follow.

In brief the maintenance plan sets out:

  • Horticultural maintenance objectives
To create a variety of distinct planting environments to create a plant assemblage that continues to give year round seasonal interest.
  • Plant replacement / improvements
To prevent the plant collections from becoming ‘tired looking' and to ensure the collections remain of the highest quality with new interest being continually added
  • Irrigation
To ensure the optimum irrigation practice, so as to maximise plant health and minimise waste.
  • Grass maintenance
Specifies grass height to be maintained and operations to be carried out to maintain a quality lawn.
  • Planting maintenance
Includes instructions on litter removal, weed control, mulching individual plant maintenance, watering and replacements.
  • Weed & pest control
Provides guidance on minimising the need for chemical intervention by prioritising cultural and biological controls.
  • Environmental sustainability
Provides guidelines on the use of pesticides, avoiding the use of horticultural peat and the eco-management and audit scheme.

All landscaped areas are checked daily and any necessary remedial works carried out, including litter picking. A dedicated team of experienced and qualified horticultural staff ensure the highest quality is maintained throughout the year.
