City Centre Ambassadors' New Powers

City Centre Ambassadors get new powers

Sheffield Safer Communities Partnership Press Release

12 February 2008

Sheffield city centre is set to be even safer, now that ambassadors have greater powers to tackle antisocial behaviour.

Seven of Sheffield City Council’s city centre ambassadors have been accredited with new powers by South Yorkshire Police, as part of a rolling programme which aims to have all 26 ambassadors accredited by the end of 2008.

The accredited ambassadors now have the power to request the name and address of anyone acting in an antisocial manner, the power to confiscate alcohol, cigarettes and tobacco from young persons and the power to issue fixed penalty notices (FPN) for a range of antisocial behaviour.

The new powers are in addition to the existing power to issue fixed penalty notices for dog fouling, littering and graffiti, which are held by all 26 City Centre Ambassadors.

Jan Wilson Leader of the Sheffield City Council stated: “The ambassadors’ new  powers will reassure people who shop, live and work in the city centre that  it  is  a  safe place to be. It’s great that the public will have the ambassadors on hand to deal with any issues that the general public may have and provide a comforting presence.  We look forward to the whole team being accredited at the end of the year.  This is a really big achievement for them and the city of Sheffield.’’

City Centre Safer Neighbourhood Inspector Neil Mutch said: ”We are pleased to announce the first accreditation scheme is to be launched in partnership with the Sheffield City Council ambassadors.  The ambassadors already work side by side with police officers and PCSOs as the Safer City Centre Partnership.  This is another way we’re extending the South Yorkshire policing family, and successfully working within the Sheffield Safer Communities Partnership.’’
