City Centre Ambassadors Get New Wheels

Sheffield City Council Press Release

1 August 2007

For the first time ever the Sheffield Council City Centre Ambassadors will be patrolling the city centre on bicycles.  The City Centre Ambassadors will have three bicycles which six members of the team will be trained up to use.  The new bicycles have been funded from existing resources, and will enable the Ambassadors to get around quicker, and provide greater coverage of the city centre.

The City Centre Ambassadors are launching the new patrol at the City Centre Motor Show, on Sunday 5 August between 11am and 4pm.  The Ambassadors and their new bicycles will be available for photographs on Sunday 5 August at 12noon outside the Town Hall.

The City Centre Ambassadors work jointly with the South Yorkshire Police through the Safer City Centre Partnership.  The new bicycle patrols will be supported through the partnership, with initial patrols being carried out by one Ambassador and one Police Community Support Officer (PCSO).  The Police Community Support Officers have four bikes, which are already being used successfully to patrol the city.  The extra coverage provided by the Ambassadors will enable bicycle patrols to be increased to cover different areas more frequently.
