Young Adult Review News (YARN)

yarn
YARN (Young Adult Review News) is a magazine which is published three times a year by the Sheffield Schools Library Service. It is the result of a working partnership between the Service, the Secondary Schools in Sheffield, and twenty of the major children's publishing houses who support the project.

These publishers supply us with free review copies of new fiction titles suitable for Secondary age students. These books are then distributed to the schools involved in the project via termly meetings with School Librarians and Teacher Librarians. Students are then asked to read the books and submit written reviews of them on the forms we provide.

The school gets to keep all of the books they take for review to add to their libraries. When the magazine is ready copies are sent to every pupil who submitted a review, and additional copies for each school to place in their libraries for all other pupils to read ... and hopefully be inspired!

The magazine is an excellent way of encouraging students' reading and therefore links in with the National Literacy Strategy. The process of producing a book review focuses the student to think in a critical way about what they are reading. Students also find it enjoyable and exciting to see their work in print.

The latest issue of YARN is available below for downloading and printing.
