Books on Prescription

Bibliotherapy - Self Help Books for Children and Families

  • This book list recommends specific titles, and introduces books covering a wide range of issues, experiences and feelings.

  • Many of these, along with similar titles, can be found in the Parent’s Collections, and also in other sections of our Children’s and Adult’s Library stock.

  • Book lists and posters have been produced for display in each library, and information given to the relevant partnership workers, e.g. Health Visitors and Medical Practitioners.

  • Families can be referred to the library by health professionals, to borrow books, in the first instance, from this list. They may have been given a ‘prescription’ for a particular title or topic.

  • If the specific title is not on the shelf at the branch, a free reservation can be made. There should also be other suitable titles actually available on the shelves at your local library.

  • Selecting books for this project has been a partnership between Sheffield Libraries and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

  • Please ask for further details at your local, central or mobile library, or just drop in and take a look at our range of books that may just offer a helping hand.
