History
The Library Theatre was built into the Central Library in 1934 as a lecture theatre with permission to host private performances for non paying audiences.
During the war it was used as an air raid shelter and for the showing of Ministry of Information films.
In 1947 some dressing rooms were included so that the hall could become a legitimate theatre, and in 1961 the theatre was redesigned with a larger stage, proscenium arch, raked auditorium and foyer, as well as improved lighting.
Since the very beginning it has been a central venue for local amateur drama groups as well as film shows and lunchtime record recitals.
Events held at the Library Theatre include Sheffield Hallam University's Film Studies course, specialist film screenings, numerous theatre group productions, concerts and music hall shows.
