MI-21 World Metal Index
Quick jump to:
From the home of Stainless Steel, and an integral part of Reference & Information, the World Metal Index (WMI) is the key to a unique collection of standards and specifications, trade literature and technical journals on both ferrous and non-ferrous metal. Over 200,000 individual metal grades are included, both current and historical.

MI-21 Metals Database
Metals Information for the 21st Century (MI-21) is the culmination of a European funded collaboration that brings together the expertise and knowledge bases of the WMI and the Welding Institute (TWI). This combination provides a powerful resource for information on metallic materials and welding consumables.
Together with National Metals Technology Centre (NAMTEC), WMI and TWI provide in depth information and technical support services.
- Why not take a look at our MI-21 website?
- A FREE demonstration of the metals database can be arranged at your convenience.
- Please use the contacts at the top of this page for further information.
Online data, information and support:
- Access to metals and suppliers information
- Help from information and technical staff at WMI and Namtec
- Access to additional information resources and services from WMI
- Assistance in searching the database
- Technical support and consultancy from NAMTEC
- Technical helpdesk support for the online website and database from NAMTEC
You can search the database for information on:
- Identifying grades of metal
- Chemical, mechanical and physical properties
- Equivalent materials
- Heat treatment, working, fabrication, welding, machining
- Corrosion, fatigue, creep and creep rupture properties
24/7 access to search the database by:
- Metal grade name/number
- Chemical analysis & mechanical properties
- Form
- Standard
- Applications and uses
MI-21 World Metal Index can help you to find answers to questions such as:
- What is the chemical composition & mechanical properties of 9SMn28?
- What was the previous British equivalent designation of X5CrNiMo17 12 2 plate?
- What is JIS H 3110?
- What are the physical properties at elevated temperatures of 430F?
- What is the Chinese equivalent of 040A10?
- Who makes Ferralium 255?
MI-21 is invaluable for use in:
- Engineering and Manufacturing
- Research and Development
- Fabrication and construction
- Repair, maintenance and restoration
20,000 datasheets are currently available online by subscription. Access to the remaining 180,000 as well as all the additional resources and services of WMI is by telephone, fax or email to wmi@sheffield.gov.uk
