The Music and Video Library offers a comprehensive service. We have the latest chart CDs, Pop, World Music, Jazz, Classical and lots more.
We also have the latest Blockbuster DVDs, Classic Films, World Cinema, Music, Documentary and Instructional DVDs and Videos.
If you want to sing or play an instrument, there is a wide variety of sheet music for all styles and genres.
Online Services
Take a look through our online music packages. All you need is your library card or smartcard number to access these either in the library or at home.
- Encyclopedia of Popular Music - With over 27,000 entries its not just Rock & Roll thats included, but popular music from all genres and periods from 1900 to the present day, including jazz, country, folk, rap, reggae, techno, musicals, world music, punk, metal, hip hop etc. Also includes genres, trends, styles, record labels, venues and music festivals.
- Grove Music Online - Provides access to the full text of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, the New Grove Dictionary of Opera and the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz. Access all aspects of music worldwide from Bach to the Blues. Includes over 50,000 articles, 20,000 biographies, over 500 Sibelius-enabled audible music examples from harmony to Handel, 5,000 links to related music websites including archives and illustrations, and 3D interactive images of musical instruments.
- CredoReference - includes the following books:
- The Faber Companion to 20th Century Pop Music - access over 2,500 entries covering the major players in the history of popular music, with entries from Abba to ZZ Top.
- Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music - access over 5,500 figures in the world of music, including the minor, the major and the nearly forgotten.
- The Harvard Dictionary of Music - find out about all styles and forms of Western music. Look at articles on the music of Africa, Asia, Latin America, etc, or look at articles that discuss today's trends.
- The New Penguin Dictionary of Music - useful for looking at short entries for musical terms, composers, musicals, instruments and much more.
- Oxford Reference Online: Premium Collection - includes the following:
- The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music - search thousands of entries for musical terms, works, composers, musicians, singers and orchestras. Look at works-lists for major composers and detailed entries on living composers and performers, ballets and operas.
- The Oxford Companion to Music - browse current research around music, including approach, analysis, theory, ethnomusicology and performance practice. All forms of music are covered, including jazz, popular music and dance.
- Who's Who in Opera - has entries on operatic characters and plot synopses for over 250 operas.
