Glass Mountain Writers - Michael Brown
Michael Brown has been a member of the Glass Mountain Writers' Group for six months, and previously attended several WEA courses on novel writing. A retired vicar, he has written the first draft of a full length novel on Greek mythology, and is currently writing a contemporary novel on the Jacob/Esau story.
The measure of effulgence
Light travels very fast,
straight way it seems.
You strike a match
and at once it gleams.
But the universe is vast.
A small arc of night sky
contains a blurred patch
so distant it takes ten million years
for an old galaxy to espy
what instantly to our view appears.
Nothing then is static
in the curves of space.
Past events for us
are still to take place.
It’s fantastic:
Somewhere in the milky way
another dawn chorus
heralds a fresh morn,
sight of a new day
where I have yet to be born.
Window
Here’s a landscape of crystal,
A toothed skyline of jutting panes
Shielding shoppers when it rains,
An Alpine spa of aisles and lanes
Packed with goodies plain and special.
There’s treasure in that window
Behind the plate glass
I’m tempted to smash,
Gems I could turn into cash,
Rubies convert into dough.
Off piste for the cyber scene
Find new windows to explore,
Images and incidents galore,
A million vistas and more,
Poised to appear on screen.
I prefer a leaded lattice,
An author’s gleaming light,
A poet’s vision infinite,
To focus my inner sight
Sipping sweetly from their chalice.
