Glass Mountain Writers - Thelma Cooper

Thelma Cooper says she has always enjoyed ‘writing and reading the written word’. Leaving school at fourteen, she confesses that for many years she put very little on paper. However, finding herself retired and widowed within the space of six months prompted Thelma to join, first the writing group at Myrtle Springs (a decision she says she blessed many times over), and now at The Glass Mountain Writers at Crystal Peaks. New to the group, Thelma hopes that by ‘contributing something of myself, and listening to the work of others, I can regain the pleasure of putting pen to paper’.

A pudding for paradise

I’m shameless and delicious,
full of fat and calories
and surrounded by hot custard.

I do my best to please.

It’s because I am so tempting,
good intentions fly away.

A little taste won’t hurt me,
that’s what I hear them say.

They tell me I’m a devil,
when for seconds they return,

that I make it far too easy,
when they really should be firm.

But now I can repent – relax
and be quite fancy free,
because some very clever cook
has made a slimline me.

Pathway

I always thought there would be more;
that life had saved a song for me.

A chance to even out the score
for everything that couldn’t be.

But time moved on
and with it, all the best of me.
The path just wasn’t mine to choose,
for what must be will surely be.
