Finding a product by the trade mark
The official registers of the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), and the Office of the European Union (OHIM) can be searched by name or image to identify the owner of a registered trade mark.

- World Intellectual Property Office - International Trade mark information database
Kompass Industrial Trade Name Register
This directory covers trade names that are active in the UK, excluding certain categories such as food, drink, tobacco and pharmaceuticals. It has 3 sections:
- By trade name and gives the name of the user
- By company name giving contact details and a summary of the trade names used in Section 1
- Foreign companies giving the product and the name of the UK agent or distributor
Kompass Worldwide
Online database of companies worldwide that can be searched by trade name to find owner and full contact details.
FAME
A database providing detailed financial analysis and corporate information for UK and Irish companies. The database can be searched by a variety of criteria including brand names.
Trade directories
Specialised directories are available covering most industries and services. Many of them will include an index of trade names, eg

To help you to identify a directory for the product or service you are researching, there is a printed list of the subjects and titles available in the Business, Science and Technology Library, or you can check the library catalogue.
The International Trademark Information Database
This can be used to find the owner of a brand name, find the brands owned by a company or find brands in a category.
