There is an extensive range of legislation governing health and safety at work available in Halsbury's Statutes 346 and Halsbury's Statutory Instruments 347 which are updated monthly.
 
The statutes are supplemented by regulation, guidance and codes of practice dealing with different aspects of workplace safety and health.

Hazardous substances

  • Dangerous substances - Croners.  Part 1 gives a description of the systems of control, supply, storage and transportation of hazardous substances.  Followed by sections relating to the particular hazard type.  In addition there is a CD listing 2000 substances and the supply and transportation information that applies.
  • Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials - N Sax & R Lewis.  The entry for each chemical includes physical and chemical properties, synonyms, toxicology and a safety profile giving the effects of human exposure.
  • Health and Safety publications from the guidance note, guidance, regulations, legislation, and approved codes of practice series, including topics such as:

Advice

  • Sheffield Occupational Health Advisory Service (SOHAS) - A charity aiming to prevent and alleviate the effects of occupational disease and injury.  They provide information and free advice for people with work related health problems.  The advisors work in GP's surgeries in Sheffield.  Details and surgery times are available through their website.  They also hold a small library of resources.
  • Workplace Health & Information Gateway (WHIG) - A database of information and contacts dealing with health and safety topics, developed by SOHAS.  It includes links to websites and publications.
  • Health and Safety Executive -  Contains information searchable by topic or industry.  Many of the leaflets are free of charge and can be downloaded.  The HSE Infoline 0845 345 0055 is the public enquiry contact centre, providing guidance and advice.
