Town and County Maps
What are they?
Maps of the town and city of Sheffield have been produced since the 1730s. They vary in size and scale but they tend to show the principal buildings and street layout.
Printed county maps of Yorkshire show the towns and villages in the county. Again, these vary in size and scale.
What dates do they cover?
- Town plans of Sheffield date from 1736.
- County maps of Yorkshire date from 1607.
- From around the 1850s Ordnance Survey Maps become available. More information about Ordnance Survey Maps.
Where can I see them?
A comprehensive collection is available at the Sheffield Local Studies Library in the Central Library, whilst a smaller selection is available at Sheffield Archives at Shoreham Street.
What format are they in?
Paper
Do I need to order them in advance of my visit?
There is normally no need to maps and plans in advance. However, Sheffield Archives runs a restricted service on Saturdays. Plans required on a Saturday should be ordered by the previous Thursday. Please email archives@sheffield.gov.uk or telephone the Archives on 0114 203 9395 to place an order.
Can I get copies?
Yes, we can normally supply copies for private study purposes, subject to the usual copyright regulations. Please contact us for further information.
