Monumental Inscriptions (MI's)

What are they?

Details taken from gravestones and other memorials in churchyards, cemeteries, burials grounds as well as the interiors of church/chapel buildings.
 

What dates do they cover?

Mainly 19th century onwards, though some interior monuments date back to the 16th century.
 

Where can I see them?

Most are available at Sheffield Archives at Shoreham Street.  The Local Studies Library in the Central Library also has some MI's.
 

What format are they in?

Paper volumes.
 

Do I need to order them in advance of my visit?

No advance booking or ordering is required.
 

Can I get copies?

Yes, we can normally supply copies for private study purposes, subject to the usual copyright regulations. Please contact us  at archives@sheffield.gov.uk for further information.

Further information

Many gravestone inscriptions have been transcribed. They often contain some good biographical detail and details of family members and are therefore a most useful resource for family history.
