Note: Sheffield Local Studies Library and Sheffield Archives are located in separate buildings approximately 10 minutes walk apart.
We aim to make our services as easily accessible as possible. The staff are there to help you, so if you have any questions or queries please speak to a member of staff who will be happy to help you.
Local Studies
At Local Studies you are free to enter and browse the bookshelves and catalogues. There is no need to fill in any forms or provide proof of identity. Please refer to a member of staff if you wish to use a computer, the photocopier or a microform reader.
Archives
At Archives you will need to register as a reader. To register you will need to provide two proofs of identification and complete a short registration form. To save you time, you can download and print the registration form from the bottom of this page. Please bring two official proofs of identity (at least one of which must include your address), on your first visit. (Acceptable forms of identification include driving licence, passport, recent utility bill (such as gas, electricity or water bill) and credit card).
By signing the registration form you agree to abide by the search room regulations which are designed to protect the unique and irreplaceable documents in our care. These include:
- Only pencils may be used
- No bags (including handbags), can be taken into our search room
- Secure lockers are provided for your use
Once you have registered you can enter the search room to consult the indexes, catalogues, books, original documents and microforms. Duty staff will help you familiarise yourself with the way the systems work. If at any time you need further advice and guidance please ask for help. All staff are identifiable via their name badges.
