Using the Service

To use the full range of services on the People's Network you need to be a member of the library service.  Membership is free to anyone who lives, works or is educated in Sheffield or the surrounding area.  Membership gives you a unique User Name and Password.  This can be used in any of our libraries to log on to the People's network.

Your personal log on will also determine if your access to the Internet is controlled by 'filtering' software.  Adult access is not filtered.  Children's access is filtered using software called WebSense; this software is used to filter access to the Internet in Sheffield's schools.

Non-members can use the People's Network once they have been issued with a 'guest' log-in by a member of staff.  Identification is required before a guest account can be issued.

All users of the People's Network must sign our Acceptable Use Policy before they are issued with log-in details.

Sessions of 30 minutes can be pre-booked for up to one hour, and up to one week in advance.  Additional time can be issued if no other user is booked to use the PC.  As the service is becoming very popular, advanced booking is advisable.

Email is one of the most popular aspects of the People's Network.  Only web-based email services are available.  If you do not already have an email account such as Hotmail or Yahoo, you will need to create one. Library staff can give you assistance in doing this.
