The People's Network – Public Access to the Internet
The People's Network is a national initiative to provide Information Communications Technology (ICT) facilities in all public libraries in the United Kingdom. The programme is lottery funded by the New Opportunities Fund (NOF) and represents new and additional resources to the funding already delivered by local authorities. When combined with the money provided for ICT training for library staff, the People's Network programme is a £120m investment in the modernisation of the country's public libraries.
Sheffield received almost £675,000 from NOF with an additional grant of £31,000 from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These grants, together with significant funding from the City Council, have enabled us to install over 200 Internet connected personal computers, spread between our libraries across the city.
This service is available to all library users and is free at the point of use.
