Arbourthorne

Outline map of Sheffield neighbourhood boundaries with the Arbourthorne neighbourhood highlighted.
Arbourthorne is a typical pre-war council estate with high concentrations of un-modernised, two-bedroom houses. Many properties suffer from poor visual appearance generating negative perceptions among residents and the wider public.

The neighbourhood commands a prominent hilltop position 2 miles southeast of the city centre, with far-reaching views from Arbourthorne Recreation Ground - frequently used in publicity to promote the city.

Some demolition of council-owned stock has taken place at Kenninghall Drive and Daresbury Drive, and an improvement programme to bring the homes up to the Government's Decent Homes Standard was started in 2004.

The Arbourthorne Masterplan, which will enable the council to bid for Housing Market Renewal funding for further improvements to the housing stock and the environment, was approved by Cabinet in May 2005.

Myrtle Springs School relocated and reopened in 2006 as Sheffield Springs Academy, one of Sheffield's first city academies. Arbourthorne Junior School has recently been rebuilt with enhanced community access, and the first phase of a children's centre was opened in February 2005.
