Altogether Better Programme
Background
Altogether Better is a five-year programme to help people and communities across the Yorkshire and Humber region to eat better, be more physically active and improve their mental health. The programme is a partnership of the regions primary care trusts, local authorities, universities and voluntary organisations hosted by NHS Yorkshire and Humber. With 6.8 million from the Big Lottery’s Fund’s Well-being programme, its aim is to help 60,000 people across the region to lead healthy lives.

Sheffield - Community Health Champions Network
The project will build capacity within the city’s priority communities to support people to be more active, eat more healthily and to improve their mental well-being. It has two strands – to train and support Community Health Champions and to create a Community Health Champions Network. The project is led by Sheffield City Council on behalf of the Sheffield First Health and Well-being Partnership (part of the Local Strategic Partnership for Sheffield). It includes the commissioning of an appropriate organisation to deliver the community health champions network.
Over 4 years the project will:
- Deliver an accredited 14 day training programme “Introduction to Community Development and Health” (ICDH) to 340 people.
- Develop 4 new accredited training programmes in community health education, delivering brief intervention or peer education around physical activity, healthy eating or mental well-being.
- Deliver accredited training in community health education, peer support and brief interventions around physical activity, health eating and mental well-being.
- Enable 60 people to access paid employment within their community delivering activity to support people in improving their well-being as a result of ICDH and health educator training and/or the experience they gain through being a volunteer Community Health Champion.
- Create and support a Network of 170 Volunteer Community Health Champions to help meet the needs of their community as active citizens and formal volunteers each volunteering once every 2 weeks.
- The Network will run 4 events for 200 volunteer champions.
The Altogether Better contract will pay for part-time training co-ordinator, delivery and development of training programmes; Community Health Champions Network co-ordinator and support officer, volunteer expenses, events, management and support costs.
