Schools Library Service for Secondary Schools
Support and Information
Access to our weekly approvals collection of 'newly published' children’s' books and spoken word cassettes.
We can arrange purchases for schools from approved library suppliers with significant discounts.
Organisation of buying visits to designated library suppliers three times each year. An additional small charge is made for these visits.
Information updates on services and resources at termly Heads of English meetings and the Secondary Schools Library Forum.
The opportunity to contribute reviews from pupils for Young Adult Review News (YARN). Participating schools receive free review books from the publishers and are involved in quarterly meetings.
Regular circulation of specially produced publisher information including book lists, guides etc.
Provision of annual 'Best of Children’s Fiction' brochures into schools.
Advice
Access to a free full day’s consultancy concerning the library and learning resource service within your school (on request). This will include the production of a report with recommendations and an action plan. The scope and outcomes will be agreed in advance.
The Schools Library Service has a long history of help and advisory work in schools in Sheffield and the raising of standards is a priority with this area of work. Part of this work involves planning new libraries, refurbished areas and developing learning centres, we are keen to be involved in all such developments in your school and would encourage you to use this service.
Access to advertised termly consultancy and topic days at the Bannerdale Centre.
A telephone Helpline service during showroom opening hours, giving help, advice and information on a wide range of topics.
The opportunity to attend and contribute to a regular forum for Secondary School Librarians. This will meet at least three times a year.
Schools Library Service to assist, where required, School Librarians participating in the ICT training funded by the New Opportunities Fund. This will include one-to-one advice, web conferencing etc.
Input to school recruitment and selection of staff to library and learning resource centres.
Mentoring of staff and assistance in their professional awareness and training.
The Schools Library Service is delegated to secondary schools whereas the service for Primary and Special Schools is devolved on an earmarked basis.
The benefits described below are made in good faith, and in expectation of a high level of service subscriptions. Whilst every effort will be made to fulfil these promises, the Service retains the right to make any reasonable adjustments that might be required in the context of available budgets for the service.
Access to special display collections for parents· evenings, inspection visits, special events, visiting authors etc.
Staff at the Schools Library Service will, on request, select materials which can be delivered and collected via the van service which visits schools at the beginning and end of each term at advertised times.
In addition to the van delivery and collection service showroom access is available for self-selection at advertised opening hours.
Schools participating in Family Learning programmes may request support in the form of additional advice and materials. Please contact the service for further details.
Support and Information
The Schools Library Service will encourage each school to nominate a link person within each school to ensure a consistent relationship.
Themed resource lists available on request will include:
- Literacy sets collection
- Large format books
- Fiction for different age levels
- 'Best of Children's Fiction' publication

Additional Service - Schools Library Service for Primary and Special Schools
In addition to the one-day consultancy offered in the main subscription service, further work may be possible subject to availability. This could include:
- Stock revision and maintenance
- Support staffing for the school library and learning resource centre to cover absence, illness etc
- Specific projects including practical work such as repairing, labelling, jacketing, and discarding etc. can be arranged at an additional charge
- Training staff and/or children in relevant skills
- The Service can also look to provide 'tailor-made sessions' in schools by arrangement at an extra charge subject to agreement.

Additional Service - Schools Library Service for Secondary Schools
Library Visits
User Education visits to the Central Library on Surrey Street are a half-day session for Y7 students. Visits by other year groups may be accommodated by arrangement with the User Education Librarian.
