Sheffield - where everyone matters

The Right to Buy Process

The Right to Buy is a very structured process. There are 5 main stages of the Right to Buy and these flow from one to the other. These stages are shown below: -

The whole process of the Right to Buy should take no longer than 6 months. We are working hard to speed up the process, so most sales go though quicker then this.

You can download the full process of the Right to Buy and the Government timescales for each stage below. We have also provided a download of the timescales we have set ourselves.

Beware of Right to Buy sellers

We, the Sheffield City Council Home Ownership Team, manage the whole process, from sending out the application form to completing the sale. We know that some council tenants have been approached by companies that say they will help them buy their council home. They offer them a mortgage or legal service and sometimes say that they will arrange for a valuation to be carried out or for plans to be drawn up. We deal with all this for you.

We and the Government are concerned that tenants may be paying hundreds or even thousands of pounds for some of these services that they are entitled to free from us under the Right to Buy rules.

Also, be wary of anyone who tries to tell you that the Right to Buy scheme is going to end. The Government has made it clear that the scheme is not about to end.

You can contact the Home Ownership Team if you would like to know anything more about the Right to Buy.
