Summer of Sanctuary 2010
Sheffield Summer of Sanctuary 2010 is a programme of events and activities to celebrate the presence and contribution of refugees in Sheffield, taking place during June, July and August 2010. To find out what’s happening, download the Summer of Sanctuary programme from the bottom of this page. The programme covers information on events and activities taking place in June and July – for information about what’s happening in August, please check this page closer to the time. If you would like printed copies of the programme, please email asylum@sheffield.gov.uk.
Sheffield Summer of Sanctuary incorporates national Refugee Week, which takes place across the UK from 14th to the 20th of June. For more information on Refugee Week, please visit the national Refugee Week website.
Can my organisation take part in Summer of Sanctuary? Can we access any funding to do so?
We have allocated specific funding for groups wishing to hold events or run projects as part of Sheffield Summer of Sanctuary and Refugee Week 2010. The theme for Refugee Week and Summer of Sanctuary is 'Different Pasts, Shared Futures', and all events/projects should aim to fulfil one or more of the following criteria:
- promote positive images of refugees and migrants
- create a culture of welcome and a better understanding between different communities
- encourage successful integration of refugees and migrants
- enable encounters between refugees, migrants and the general public
- show the talent and expertise that refugees and migrants bring with them to the UK
- raise awareness of the reality of refugee and migrant experiences
The application and grant process is managed by the City Council's Small Grants Team. For more information on Small Grants funding for Summer of Sanctuary, and to get an application pack, please contact the Small Grants Team on 0114 273 4113.
How can I publicise my Summer of Sanctuary event? Can the City Council help with this?
We have now published the Summer of Sanctuary programme for events and activities taking place during June and July – you can download it at the foot of the page.
If you are planning events and activities to take place in August, and would like details to be circulated by the City Council, please email the following details to asylum@sheffield.gov.uk:
- Basic information about the event or activity that’s taking place
- When, where and at what time it’s happening
- Any attendance costs, such as entry fees, if reduced fees are available for those on lower incomes and if travel expenses can be refunded for asylum seekers
- If attendance is restricted – for example, some events may not be suitable for children
- Contact details for the event or activity organisers
- Any other relevant information
You can also add your event or activity to Event Sheffield, clicking on ‘Submit Event’ and entering your event information.
How can I find out what other organisations are planning for Summer of Sanctuary?
We have set up an online calendar to help you plan when your Summer of Sanctuary events and activities can take place. Using the calendar will help you to plan a date and time for your event or activity that does not clash with what others are planning, and will help let others know what your plans are.
To access the calendar and add an event, please follow the instructions below:
- Go to Google Calendars
- Enter email summerofsanctuary@googlemail.com AND password sheffield.
- Select ‘calendar’ from the left-hand side of the screen
- Use the calendar on the left to move to the date you’d like to view.
- Add your details to the calendar in the main view - please include the event/activity title, your name, the name of your organisation and a contact telephone number and/or email.
Is there a Summer of Sanctuary logo? Can I use it?
We have produced a Summer of Sanctuary logo to be used in programmes and on promotional posters. You can download a copy of the logo to use it on your publicity material - including posters, leaflets, t-shirts, banners and so on – from the bottom of this page. If you have any problems downloading the logo, or if you require it in a different format, please contact Rachel Westerby in the City Council Asylum Team.
How else can I help to promote Summer of Sanctuary?
You can help promote Summer of Sanctuary in lots of different ways. You can…
Display a Summer of Sanctuary poster in your window, at your organisation’s premises or anywhere else you can think of – if you would like to receive one or more posters, please contact the City Council Asylum Team on 0114 273 6612 or email a request to asylum@sheffield.gov.uk.
Distribute Summer of Sanctuary programmes to your friends, family members or those you work with. If you would like copies to be sent to you, please contact the City Council Asylum Team on 0114 273 6612 or email a request to asylum@sheffield.gov.uk.
