Service Costs
The Private Sector Housing Services budget for 2006/07 is £3,098,011 providing a range of services for the 513,000 citizens of Sheffield. About 3% of what we spend comes from Council Tax. Most of the money (77%) comes from central government funding. A further 20% comes from income from charges for services, such as mandatory licensing for Houses In Multiple Occupation (HIMO) and admin fees.
Each person pays on average £0.17 annually through their council tax for the following services:
- Advice, support and encouragement for owners to deal with disrepair
- Advice and support for private tenants
- Advice and support for private landlords to drive up standards in the private rented sector
- Financial assistance to vulnerable owner occupiers through the provision of a range of loans. Where essential support is required that cannot otherwise be cost effectively funded, we may provide grant assistance
- Promotion of energy efficiency and seek to reduce fuel poverty
- Help people with disabilities to live independent lives
- Address area regeneration by targeting investment and assistance in specific areas the city and by bringing empty properties back into use
