Student Accreditation Scheme

** The Accreditation Scheme is not currently open to new applications, as the standards and processes are currently under review** 
 
This scheme is run by the Council to promote and recognise higher standards for shared student houses and flats.  It is aimed primarily at typical Sheffield terraced houses shared by up to 6 students.  The scheme is voluntary and there is no fee to join.
 
(With the introduction of mandatory Houses in Multiple Occupany (HMO) licensing which includes most student housing with 3 or more storeys and occupied by 5 or more persons please also see the Houses in Multiple Occupancy section.)
 
Accreditation standards for the Student Accreditatin Scheme cover, in addition to the standards required by the Responsible Landlord Scheme, the following additional higher standards:
 
  •    fire safety – mains powered smoke alarms are required
 
  •    gas and  electrical safety and furniture fire safety
 
  •    kitchen and bathroom amenities
 
  •    energy efficiency  - insulation and heating controls
 
  •    security

Accreditation advantages to landlords
 
  • marketing  -displaying the scheme logo and certificate when advertising and letting, including in University accommodation advertising and web pages and listing on Council website
 
  • free advice and information to bring your properties up to accreditation standards and detailed specifications to give to builders
 
  • access to incentives negotiated by the Council for responsible landlords including a range of building and house clearing services, access to dumpit sites and information about opportunities of interest to landlords
 
Accreditation advantages to students and parents
 
  • accredited student properties can be found in most student areas and cover a range of rent levels. 
 
  • reassurance  - all accredited properties are inspected and have met the scheme standards.
 
  • landlords and agents of accredited properties have made a commitment to running their properties properly.
 
To apply for accreditation
 
  • Properties must be inspected by the Council, an application form completed and copies of gas and electrical certificates provided.  Look at the bottom of this page to download an application form.
 
  • Owners and agents must meet ‘fit and proper’ person criteria and sign up to the scheme management code.
