Your Home When Relationships Breakdown

Your housing rights when your relationship ends will depend on the answers to various questions. This includes:

  • Have you been in a heterosexual or lesbian/gay relationship?

  • Have you been married to the person you are leaving?

  • Are you taking legal proceedings, for example, for divorce?

  • Are you an owner occupier or tenant – are you a joint owner or tenant?

  • Are there children – and whose are they?

Before you decide to leave your home when your relationship ends you may want to think about whether it should be you leaving. See Relationship Breakdown - Your Right to Remain in your home   If you find you do need to leave your home then there are various rehousing options you can consider:

  • Emergency Accommodation. If you need to leave immediately – perhaps because you are scared for your own safety – there is Hostel Accomodation and emergency refuges you can contact.  You can also contact organisations such as the Samaritans Tel: 2767277 or Sheffield Women's Aid Tel: 2426887 who will provide you with immediate advice.   You can also apply to the Housing Solutions Service if you are fleeing domestic violence.

  • Longer Term Accommodation. There are various ways that you can be rehoused – follow this link on Looking for a Home or needing to move You will find that many Housing Associations, and the Council – if you are a Council tenant – can give you priority on their waiting lists of you have been experiencing domestic violence.
