If you want Hostel Accommodation

There are two main types of hostel in Sheffield:

Direct Access Hostels
These are mainly for people who have  nowhere to go tonight and who either cannot or don't want to apply to the City Council's Homeless Section.  You can either contact them yourself, or be referred by another agency –such as an advice centre.  You should ring to check if there is a spare bed before turning up or being referred and making sure the hostel will take you.

Non Emergency Accommodation
This is usually run by the voluntary sector, often in partnership with Housing Associations or other agencies.  Generally they have waiting lists and some only accept referrals from specific agencies such as Social Services.  You need to contact the hostel for details of their criteria and how to apply.  Non-direct hostels often offer somewhere to live for longer periods (some up to two years) and many provide support with the aim of trying to help the resident leave the project able to cope on their own.

If you want to contact any of these hostels see the list of local hostels below. All the emergency hostels can be contacted via the Samaritans on 2767277.

Examples of direct access and non direct access hostel accommodation:-

  • For families not fleeing violence - none;

  • For single men - Salvation Army, St Annes

  • For single women over eighteen - Salvation Army

  • For young people - Roundabout Project, Pitsmoor Youth Housing Trust, Cherry Tree

  • Refuges - Sheffield Womens' Aid, Haven House Project, Ashiana (Asian women and children)

Many of these hostels try to provide other services to their residents – such as support services, and help with move on accommodation.
