Sheffield Reconnect Mediation Service

The Mediation Service is here to help young people aged 16 to 21 who are faced with homelessness due to problems at home with friends or family.

You can still get help if you have already left home or if you are staying with someone else temporarily.

What does mediation do?

Mediation aims to bring people in dispute together and solve the problems their disagreements are causing.  Sometimes things go too far and it is hard for people to sort things out for themselves.  But if everyone is willing to try, our mediators can help you to find solutions and resolve matters to everyone's satisfaction.

How does it work?

The mediators will want to meet everyone involved, but initially this can be arranged separately.  A meeting of everyone together will only be arranged if everyone wants to.  You do not have to face each other together if you don't want.  The mediator will encourage you to give your side of the story in full.

The other parties will be encouraged to do the same.  The mediator remains totally impartial and will not be looking to blame or find fault with anyone.  Confidentiality is maintained at all times.  The mediator will listen carefully and in the process may suggest possible solutions to

the problems you tell them about.  Any decisions will be made by the parties themselves.  Any agreement which is reached together is not legally binding.

Confidentiality

Mediation is entirely voluntary and totally confidential.  However there is a duty to involve Social Services if there is a risk to child or adult protection.  Social Services workers are also trained to be confidential.  The mediation process can be stopped by either party at any time if they wish to withdraw from the process.
