Water Conservation

A picture of a shower
Homes in the UK use a huge amount of water, more than can be replaced naturally. Saving water at home, in the garden, or at work takes very little effort, but makes a big difference. The key is for everyone to reduce personal wastage.

Get a water saving device

There are many ways you can conserve water around your house. An example of this is a simple measure is to install a water saving device in the cistern of your toilet. These are available from your water company for free.

Things to do at home

Below is a list of simple ways to conserve water and at the same time save money, if you’re on a water meter:
  • When washing clothes make sure you have a full load and use the economy setting. Always buy an energy efficient machine

  • When boiling the kettle, make sure you only put in as much water as you need

  • Don’t prepare vegetables under a running tap, fill a bowl instead.

  • Also, don’t wash dishes under a running tap, use a bowl and another bowl to rinse them off in.
  • Install a shower! It’ll use less water than a bath but be aware of “Power Showers”. They normally use more water than a bath.

  •  Never leave the tap running when you brush your teeth. Use a glass instead

  • Use the plug!

  • Use dish water on your garden. This type of water is good for fending off aphids

  • When buying a new bathroom suite, make sure your toilet is duel-flush and that your bath is not over-sized

  • Lawns are great survivors. Even when they look dead, they’ll spring back with the first heavy rain, so try to avoid watering them whenever possible.
  • Install a water saving device if you have a large cistern

  • Avoid watering the garden with a hose. If you must water, then use a watering can

  • Avoid watering the garden in the midday sun when the water will evaporate. Mornings and evenings are best.

  • Avoid washing your car with a hose or pressure pump. Use a bucket instead

  • Fit insulation to you pipes. If these freeze and burst in winter you’ll waste a lot of water.

  • Water less frequently, but deeply and thoroughly. This will also help plants to develop healthy, deep root systems

  • Always reports water leaks to your water company. Contact details are below.
