Renewable Energy - Photovoltaic
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) is a non-polluting energy source. This involves placing solar panels on your roof and connecting them to your electrical system. Installing your own PV system means that you can generate your own electricity from the free and inexhaustible energy from the sun.
The panels need to be free from shade & pointing in a southern direction. PV can be incorporated in roof tiles.
A photovoltaic system has no moving parts, emits no pollution, is silent, and requires minimal maintenance. It also has low running costs & long life span, will work when overcast and will reduce your electricity bills
While these systems are still expensive, rising energy prices and grants available are lowering the cost on a constant basis.
Advantages:
- Low running costs & long life span
- Will work when overcast
- Will reduce your electricity bills
- No carbon emissions
Disadvantages:
- Expensive to install at present even with a grant
- Electricity cannot easily be stored & is generated during the day when least needed
- Must have south facing area
