Renewable Energy - Micro Wind

Micro wind turbines
Micro wind turbines are fairly new on the market and are an alternative to large wind farms. They can be installed on the side or front of your house. Wind speed is stronger the higher you go so if possible they should be fitted as high as possible.

They can provide anywhere from 15% - 30% of your electricity needs depending on the wind speed in your area. Ideally the turbine should not be obstructed by houses or large trees etc, as this can affect the wind speed that actually reaches the turbine.

There is also a possibility that you could sell excess electricity back to an electricity supplier.

At present you will need to contact the Development Control to enquire whether planning permission will be needed. Follow this link to see the Development Control website .

The British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) has recently launched an addition to its website, a comprehensive guide to the issues relating to small scale wind systems. Follow this link to the British Wind Energy Association where you can acquire information on the range of available technologies, grants, planning issues, frequently asked questions and research. There is also a range of case studies of existing installations, from homes and businesses to primary schools and farms. (Please note, this website opens in a new window)

Advantages:

  •   Low running costs & fuel never runs out
  •   Works day & night
  •   Will reduce electricity bill & possible payment if you supply excess power to grid
  •   No carbon emissions
  •   Virtually silent
  •   Electricity can feed straight into the grid
  •   Could increase house value

Disadvantages:

  •   Initially expensive
  •   Visual impact & maybe planning requirements
